A bigger rainbow in these troubled times!
Well , as troubled as these last few months have been ( the COVID 19 pandemic) , we have seen a few rainbows too... like, real actual rainbows ....sometimes even two rainbows at a time (and before you ask.... No, no one was drunk at the time!) ....and let’s not forget the fabric rainbow in the creativeclutterroom , which is the hero of this post.
This quilt is a larger generous queen size version of my Rainbow Pockets quilt which was a twin size quilt. I was just showing ( or is it showing off ?! ) photos of quilts that I had made to a friend, when she said, “please make me one like this “ .... 6 of my most favourite words in the whole wide world , or I had thought so until she said “I want it a little bigger” ...my new favourite 6 words ! I didn’t start working on it till 6 months later , but we won’t talk about that now. Did I mention it’s my first commissioned quilt? Yay!
So why does this quilt warrant a post of its own ? Why not club it with its twin sized sibling ? Well, it’s like the title says , it’s “ A bigger rainbow in these troubled times “ , for by the time I actually started working on the quilt, we were in the midst of the pandemic, with huge number of casualties worldwide and a whole lot of uncertainties for those who weren’t affected yet. Working on this quilt eight HSTs at a time gave me a teeny-tiny sense of normalcy on a daily basis . My daily dose of cheer, you could say! However uncertain things were in the outside world, the rainbow continued to shine in my sewing room, growing brighter and brighter as the quilt grew. Granted, what usually takes me a lazy month took me four times as much to complete what with everyone being at home and the additional workload and having no dedicated sewing times or room or even a desk , etc .... but the rush of happiness on completing something creative is totally worth it and hard to come by in these times! Even the clutter generated in trying to do something creative and the resulting extra work to clean up the room is worth it!
Though I’ll admit quilting this massive queen size quilt on my domestic machine wasn’t easy ....lot of non-creative unpicking of stitches was involved.... but even that didn’t put a dent in my rainbow! Look how pretty it turned out .....It’s like a piñata burst open in the far right corner and there’s confetti raining down ....now all we need is a party 🥳 and some kids and some gifts and some food and ...bummer...social distancing - need that too 🙄
Stepping into Profound Prattling territory here.... if only in name( I’m prattling for sure, and for a change , it’s profound 😇) but all I’m trying to say here is - Make something....anything .....music, art, writing, reading ...whatever ....big or small, good or bad, it doesn’t matter... your mind being engaged and away from the troubles of the world albeit for a few minutes, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of it is enough to rejuvenate you ...it’ll be your own big rainbow in these troubled times !
Happy quilting !
