Draft your own diamond quilting template
Draft your own 4” finished diamond quilting template
It’s really easy ! This template makes 4” finished size diamonds. Why 4” finished size? I needed it for a project of mine, and couldn’t find a printable template online for this particular size. So decided to draft one instead. And since I did all this work, might as well make a blog post and tutorial out of it! 🤓
Materials required :
Quilting mat
Quilting ruler
A sheet of paper/Template plastic
Pen/pencil to mark
Scissors
Instructions:
Refer to the photo below. Draw a line 4.5” from the edge of the paper
Place the 60 degree line of your ruler on the line drawn on paper.
Draw a line against the edge of the ruler
Cut along the slated line and the horizontal line.
Place the strip of paper on your cutting mat on the 9” line such that the inside tip of the diagonal cut edge is flush against the first line marked on the mat, and the top edge lines up with the 9” line, like shown in the photo below.
Place your ruler on the 60 degree line marked on the mat and cut. You now have a 4” finished size diamond template!
On the other hand, if you’d like to cut diamonds without making templates, or without a special ruler, here’s how to do it.
If we are cutting diamonds, we’ll need triangles at the top and bottom too. Here’s how to make equilateral triangles without special rulers.
As for the vertical half diamonds to fill in the sides of your diamond quilt, make the initial cut 3/4” from the edge. These pieces can be used for the sides. No need to even trim it to size ….the diagonal edge and the height are already the right size. The extra fabric on the side will get trimmed off while squaring the quilt. Or you could go ahead and cut it to half inch wide from the short edge.
For diamonds of other sizes, cut your fabric or template strips half inch wider than the finished size you need and work similarly.
Hope this was helpful !
Happy quilting !
