A Walk In The Park QAL

Yes ! That’s what it is called , “A Walk In The Park” ! Pun Intended 😜

Whether you look at it as a literal walk in the park where you are seeing beautiful flowers , or “as-if-New-York-Beauties-could-ever-be-a-walk-in-the-park”, by the time you are done with this quilt, you will be walking in the park with flowers blooming all over your quilt,  with a “New York Beauties ? They’re so easy , just a walk in the park “ attitude !

QAL quiltalong pattern containing New York Beauty quilt blocks

A WALK IN THE PARK by Sindhu Aragam

Quilt measures 40 x 44.5 inches. Size is inclusive of a 2” border that can be customized/omitted. More borders can be added to make a bigger quilt. Of course, those who wish to, can just do the New York Beauty blocks(14 blocks ) and join them together in a design of their choice to form a variety of products too.

QAL information :

  • We will start from 1st of March.

  • A few of us Capital Quilters and some other friends have already started and finished Block 1. So for those joining now, Block 1 and Block 2 will be released together on 1st of March.

  • A new block will be released every 15 days.

  • The NYB Blocks are set on point and are approximately 9”x 9” on the diagonal. The sides of the NYB blocks measure 6 7/8”.

  • Be prepared to delve into curved piecing and FPP and a tiny bit of Y-seams … by the time you finish all the curved piecing, you’ll be saying Y-seams are a piece of cake !

For those who are intimidated by the look of a complex quilt (and it does look quite complex, doesn’t it? And spectacular too ! 😍) let me say this - it’s all done just one block at a time. It’s all the same curved piecing repeated over and over. The same FPP done again and again in different patterns and combinations. The worst that’ll happen is you’ll miss a few points or your block will be a couple of mms smaller. Hardly noticeable in the large pattern. You could actually dare someone to find a point that’s cut off - I’d wager their eyes start to water before they find success 😂

Let’s start planning for our new quilt

Yardage requirements

Approximate yardage requirements for the quilt are given to help order/ check existing fabric availability.

  • Background fabric - 2 3/4 yards

  • Light Green fabric - 1/4 yard

  • Dark Green fabric - 1/4 yard

  • Dark Teal Green fabric - 1/2 yard

  • Scraps of varied colours and shades and/or in a colour scheme of your choice - approximately 4 yards

    • If you are using yardage, approximately 1/8th yards of different colours/shades of your chosen colours totalling 4 yards could be used.

    • This does seem like a lot … but the more variety you bring in with the fabrics, the more movement your quilt will have.

Note : You could use the same green for all of the leaves …then just ensure you have the combined yardage of all of the greens.

Every block comes with an Instruction pdf that contains information regarding the exact fabric requirements to make the block as per the cover quilt depicted here.

Finding fabrics for a scrappy quilt

Scrap Quilt how to find scraps making a scrap quilt

Obviously, you can’t buy it all ! The cover quilt has so many colours and shades and yes, that’s what gives it it’s amazing look, but you can’t buy a fat quarter to use just one square out of it ( I might’ve done exactly that, but shhhhh … ! )

So how do you get these scraps ? Dive into your scrap bin, of course.

Rummaging through your scrap baskets means more than you think ! Here’s a few ways to make most of your leftover fabrics. Remember that it’s a scrap quilt, and some of the pieces we need are tiny. Keep them aside and try it out. If it fits, that’s awesome !

Post your blocks

Please remember to post your blocks on Instagram and Facebook using #awalkinthepark and #creativeclutterroom.

Like any guild activity, the opportunity and the forum is there. The people support in terms of Facebook groups, Instagram and Whatsapp Groups is also there, encouraging and loving every block, providing a great learning opportunity and insight into colours, combinations, etc. Let’s make use of it !

Full disclosure: This is my first time designing a pattern on EQ8, so I’m also groping around and finding my way. Please bear with me.

I’m doing the blocks just slightly ahead of you, that’s all. The perfect 1/4” seam continues to elude me, so that’s my biggest challenge here. What’s yours? Comment below and let me know ….
